Context 👇
First of all let's understand what’s a skill.
Anything that helps you do a particular task quickly, efficiently, and with a certain amount of expertise.
My definition of a skill is something that needs a long time to learn, it’s tough, and usually you won’t like it in the beginning.
For example - swimming, driving, painting, public speaking, musical instruments, etc
If you don’t know swimming, and you start to learn it, you won’t like it in the beginning, it will take some time to learn, and get expertise on it.
But, the good thing is that it’s a life saving skill. And once you learn it, you won’t have to make that effort again - after that it’s a fun activity.
The Confusion 👇
A lot of people get confused between experience and skill.
If you have grown an Instagram page from zero to 1 lakh followers, your skill is not Instagram Marketing. Your skills are Graphic Designing, Video editing, Content or Copywriting - which you used to grow on Instagram.
The strategies that you learned while growing your page are because of your experience and expertise in the skills.
Core Skills in Marketing 👇
In marketing there are fundamental skills you need to learn and build expertise to become awesome at what you do.
Here’s the ultimate combo of skills for a marketer
Copywriting / Content Writing - Anything you do in digital marketing, requires you to write or communicate with your audience. You need to learn the art of getting attention, and writing engaging content.
Graphic Designing - Just like writing, designing is a fundamental skill of digital marketing. You need to be aware of basic principles, and at least one tool (CANVA / Photoshop/ Illustrator) to be able to do basic stuff.
Website Development (WordPress, Wix) - You need not be an expert, but if you know the basics, you will always be ahead in the race.
Video Editing - Must have if you are into video content on Instagram and YouTube.
Data Analytics - Once you run campaigns, you will have access to tons of data. You need to be able to understand and interpret the information for better decision making.
Where to start learning them 👇
Copywriting + Content Writing -> Read books - HBR Guide to Better Business Writing, Ogilvy on advertising. For practice start writing on social media - LinkedIn, Medium, and Twitter.
Graphic Designing -> YouTube Channel - GFX Mentor - start with Adobe Illustrator. For practice, start an Instagram page and try to grow it.
Website Development -> YouTube Channel - WebInsights, CareofWeb, Website Learners. For practice create a dummy website or blog.
Video Editing -> YouTube Channel - GFX Mentor
Data Analytics -> YouTube Channel - Loves Data & Measure School
How to approach 👇
Dedicate daily 1 to 2 hours
Pick up 1 skill/1 topic at a time
Learn, practice and implement in a Live Project
Share whatever you learn on social media
Don’t expect to become a pro in 1st attempt
My Thoughts 👇
It’s okay to be an expert in any one skill and have working knowledge in others.
However, to beat the competition as you grow in your career, try to build more skills.
When you have more skills you make yourself more valuable. You become the go-to person for everything. You invite more work and the company becomes dependent on you. They can't afford to lose you after some time. You are in a better position to negotiate.
The tough part -> it's damn difficult to build a new skill. Because you need to push yourself out of your comfort zone.
But it's one time effort, you learn something new, and it stays with you forever.
About the 28 Days Digital Marketing Workshop
I have built the workshop focussed on skills. My goal is to make the participants capable enough to take up projects independently as a freelancer after the workshop.
So, whatever we teach are action oriented, and will be handy when you start doing work in digital marketing.
